Students traveled from Missouri westward through the Rocky and Sierra Nevada mountains to San Francisco California and panned for gold. This hands on experience had students utilizing shovels to dig in the dirt and collect their gold by reenacting the process that the 49er’s utilized to find and pan for gold in the West!
Kean Ocean Teacher Education Job Fair Thursday April 3, 2025 2-5pm Gateway Atrium
Lecturer, Daun Ward and Supervisors Robin Molitores and Vic Mossa join their interns.
John Denardo (C1) Physical/Health Education created a non-traditional "Drum-Fit" Lesson
Drum-fit is an activity that promotes rhythm, movement and physical activity all wrapped in one. Students follow along with different types of music, maintaining the beat with their "drums and sticks" and movement around their "drums." In addition to the workout and fun, drum-fit is unique in that everyone can participate.....seated, standing, drum beat only or with movements. Its supportive and inclusive of all students, no matter their current abilities. By the looks of it, Mr. Denardo was having a bit of fun with his students during the demo!

Brianna Berrocal (C2), Creates unique project for Black History Month.
Brianna selected an HBCU college, decorated the door with the university, two graduates of West Virginia State University and created a picture frame with their pictures alongside a short description of who they were and what made them stand out. Bri then cut out pictures of all her students in the class and put them in cap and gowns with the corresponding colors of the university with a sign above that said “Class of 2025.”
Cole Stephens (C2) Creates Historical Based Project
Cole Stephens and his Cooperating Teacher, Mr. Darren Lee had bulletin boards created based upon the Underground Railroad Quilt codes. According to legend, a safe house along the Underground Railroad was often indicated by a quilt hanging from a clothesline or windowsill. These quilts were embedded with a kind of code, so that by reading the shapes and motifs sewn into the design, an enslaved person on the run could know the area’s immediate dangers or even where to head next.
Gabriella Argento (C2) Co-Presents at Point Pleasant PD Day
Gabriella and her cooperating teacher, Mona Soliman co-presented the workshop, "Creativity in English Assessments." The session included deep discussion about the benefits of creativity in assessments and how they can deepen understanding of texts. Adaptable and creative assessments were shared with attendees.
Nicole Restrepo (C2), Elementary Education
Nicole is facilitating a science- based inquiry lesson on landforms. The landforms students were learning about included mountains, hills, plateaus, plains, rivers, lakes, and oceans. This was a second grade class of students at Battle Hill School in Union, New Jersey.
Spring 2025 Orientation
The kickoff orientation for nearly 300 pre-service teaching interns was a dynamic and inspiring event, setting the stage for their upcoming internships. As they arrived, the interns were greeted warmly by student placement office team and supervisors and even received some SWAG. The day was thoughtfully structured, offering an opportunity for interns to connect with their supervisors, fostering relationships that will be pivotal throughout their teaching experiences. They also participated in a professional development (PD)-style orientation, featuring interactive sessions designed to equip them with practical strategies, tools, and insights for success in the classroom. The event emphasized collaboration, preparation, and enthusiasm, ensuring the interns felt empowered and ready to make a meaningful impact as future educators.
2024 Fall interns in action at their field work placements
Brianna Berrocal (C1), Elementary Education
Brianna Berrocal turned an ELA plan into a cross-curricular lesson by incorporating sequencing and counting throughout a story. Pictured here are different visual representations of the story in their proper sequence, and students had to show how many fingers to align with which event she pointed at. Students completed the story together and Brianna ended the lesson by having students complete a review sheet that incorporated both literacy skills and math sequencing practice.
Jaclyn Fox (C2), Elementary Education
Jaclyn Fox created an interdisciplinary lesson about Oobleck. The students in her class read Oobleck and used adjectives to predict what it would look like and feel like. Students then had the opportunity to create their own oobleck (slime) by measuring ingredients for a science lab. Jaclyn developed a rubric for students so they were able to self assess their competence, learning and outcomes in the lab.
Morgan Madigan, (C2) Elementary Education
Morgan not only created an engaging and exciting lesson on the voting process, but created an election-like atmosphere for her second grade students. They were even able to experience "the voting booth" and cast their vote for their candidate. Inclusion of patriotic decorations enhanced the experience.
Talia Calabrese (C2), Elementary Education
Talia created a lesson for her 2nd grade students all about Veteran's Day that included a special treat. Talia was able to have her very own father, a veteran, join her as a guest visitor and have the students enjoy saluting and learning all about this American holiday that focuses on those who served our country.
Jamely McAlmont, (C2), Elementary Education
Jamely got her her students excited for the scientific method using seasonal props; pumpkins! Students were engaged measuring pumpkins, and also categorized and classified them and also made a prediction of whether they would float or sink in water. They used post its and tally marks to post their predictions. "They actually float!"
Carly Zellman (C2), Secondary Education
Carly works after school and the evenings assisting the Toms River Intermediate East Band at their rehearsals. Her Kean S.T.A.Y.S. project focuses on prepping students for events such as the Halloween and Veteran's Day Marching Band shows. Students and colleagues love having Carly join them in the rehearsals and when she joins them on the big day!

The New Jersey Science Convention is the best professional development opportunity in the Mid-Atlantic area for science educators, including teachers, administrators, and student interns. The convention has a history of providing science teachers in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania with professional development over the course of two days. The goal is to provide a variety of sessions addressing K-12 three dimensional/NGSS lessons in all science areas. Many sessions focused on lessons that integrate new technologies and demonstrate methods of creating culturally responsive science classrooms that promote equity and inclusion.
Fall interns in action at their field work placements this fall...
Sara Simoes (C2), Elementary Education
Sara is teaching first grade students how to plant seeds and make predictions about what they will see in the near future. Her lesson had a balance of building writing skills and promoting critical thinking with journal entree writing about what they anticipate happening to the seeds. The experiential component was having student make their own "mini lawns" with cups of soil, adding two types of seeds and discussing the importance of water and sunlight.
Britney Field (C1), Elementary Education
With guidance from Mrs. Nataly Mahoney (R), Britney (L) created a classroom board enhancing the 1st-grade experience. It features math frames for counting school days, voice levels to manage discussions, and a daily schedule for easy reference. The board also includes sections for the current season and weather, helping students connect real-world observations with their lessons. A calendar highlights important dates and events, fostering community engagement. This setup enriches learning across subjects and encourages active student participation.
FALL 2024 Orientation
The recent intern orientation, attended by nearly 300 pre-service teachers and close to 50 supervisors, was a pivotal event designed to set the stage for a successful transition into the classroom. The orientation provided an invaluable opportunity for these future educators to gain insights into the practical aspects of teaching, including classroom management, lesson planning, and student engagement strategies. In addition to discussing the necessary preparation for the classroom, the event emphasized the importance of building strong relationships between supervisors and interns. These relationships are critical, as they provide a support system throughout the internship experience. Through collaborative discussions and interactive sessions, the orientation also delved into real-world scenarios, allowing both interns and supervisors to explore potential challenges they may encounter during the internship. This holistic approach ensured that all participants left with a deeper understanding of the complexities of teaching and the confidence to navigate their upcoming experiences.
